KUCHING: The Malaysian government will not rush to export its chicken eggs to Singapore following the alleged discovery of Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) in the eggs.

Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister (KPDNHEP) Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said it was important to make sure there are no bacteria or problems with the eggs as confirmed by the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) beforehand.

“Whether we export it (eggs) again to Singapore, it will depend on the situation and we have to communicate with Singapore,” he said in a press conference after attending the Malaysia Prihatin programme with the Federation of Chinese Associations Sarawak at City Square, Jalan Pending today (April 3).

Nanta was responding to questions on whether Malaysia would continue to export eggs after the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) ordered the withdrawal of egg imports from several Malaysian companies due to the presence of SE.

“If there is any problem, we will not export. We will also not allow it to be sold in Malaysia if there is detection of bacteria.

“We will withdraw them from the market. That is why we want to know from all responsible parties if there are reports of bacteria, we will carry out an investigation,” he said.

He explained after investigation, the government will control the products and immediately pull them from the market.

SE contamination happens due to poor farming practices in terms of biosecurity and hygiene.
