SIBU: No total lockdown will be imposed in this division despite the implementation of stricter standard operating procedures (SOPs) effective for two weeks from Feb 9 to 23 as recommended by the Sibu Division Disaster Management Committee (SDDMC).

Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) chairman Sempurai Petrus Ngelai said the stricter SOPs were imposed solely to reduce traffic movements following the increase in positive Covid-19 cases in Sibu Jaya.

He was alluding to rumours in the social media claiming that around 30,000 Sibu Jaya residents would be under total lockdown beginning Tuesday (Feb 9) where those with police permits would also be banned from entering or leaving Sibu Jaya.

“There are no movement restrictions in Sibu Jaya because residents with police permits can still travel in and out of the area. There is no problem at all.

“Besides, only businesses related to eateries, pharmacies, clinics, banks and petrol stations are allowed to operate in Sibu Jaya, while others, although categorised under important services, are not allowed to operate,” he said on Monday (Feb 8).

Sempurai also advised the residents of Sibu Jaya to go out only to buy their necessities in their areas and to avoid going to Sibu town centre.

For residents of Sibu Jaya looking to enter the town, he explained that they could do so at the discretion of the police based on their excuses.

“My advice to all Sibu Jaya residents with the increase in SOPs starting tomorrow (Feb 9) is to give your full cooperation and be patient with the current restrictions.

“We hope that stricter SOPs can break the chain of Covid-19 infection.

“I also urge all residents to prioritise their personal hygiene such as washing their hands regularly or using hand sanitiser and wearing face masks.

“Only leave the house when it is necessary to buy food supplies or other important things. If not, please stay at home. For those who live in flats, please stay in your own unit and avoid any social gatherings at this time,” he added.
