PADAWAN: Wearing face masks in public places would not be a problem because Sarawakians are disciplined and they know the importance of wearing it during this Covid-19 pandemic.

Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang was commenting on the compulsory use of face masks in crowded public areas and public transport starting August 1 by the National Security Council recently.

“It is a good thing to do and I support this because it helps in fighting the Covid-19 pandemic in the country.

“In the past, face masks helped in reducing cases from hundreds to zero,” he said when met by reporters after attending a school bag donation drive at SJK Chung Hua Batu 10 yesterday.

Lo added that the council will wait for orders from the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) on enforcing the compulsory use of face masks.

“In order to curb and break the transmission chain of Covid-19, the public also needs to be disciplined to control and fight the virus,” he explained.

He expressed his satisfaction with the community under MPP, who have continued using face masks without being told to do so.

However, he urged the public to be responsible and not simply throw away used face masks.

“Be it used face masks or cigarettes, we are still not disciplined in that matter.

“We are worried that it will cause germs to spread — proper disposal of used face masks must be followed,” he explained.
