Dr Ooi explains on the COVID-19 risk assessment.

KUCHING: Here’s something to reflect on. Yes, the Omicron variant of Covid-19 causes milder symptoms but only if you are vaccinated.

Senior consultant paediatrician of Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) Dr Ooi Mong How said people who have been vaccinated, boosted and with no health problems would experience milder symptoms should they be infected by Omicron.

“But it can be dangerous for others such as young children because they are not vaccinated.

“Omicron can kill,” he said during Kuching City South Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong’s weekly Facebook live session on Saturday (Jan 15).

However, Dr Ooi said that the public need not panic or get worried as a lot more is known about Covid-19 today than when it was first heard of in Jan 2020.

“It is an airborne infection. We can stay safe by breathing only clean air. Do every possible to reduce the risk of breathing virus-contaminated air,” he said.

He said this includes opening windows and doors to ensure good ventilation and considering an air purifier if good indoor ventilation can be secured.

“Also wear a high quality mask properly at all times and avoid crowded areas, especially indoor venues,” he said.

He urged the people to carry out risk assessment to identify what situation may cause transmission of the Covid-19 virus.

“For instance, if you are going outdoors for a walk at the park and there are no people there, it is safe and you can remove your mask.

“But if you are outdoors in an open market for example, it can be crowded, thus there will be transmission,” he said.

He also reminded that it is important to get the body defense ready and that can be done by getting vaccinated and boosted against Covid-19.
