MIRI: The Department of Veterinary Services Sarawak is advising animal lovers to avoid adopting or buying dogs with unknown vaccination status.

And those keeping pets are recommended to have their animals vaccinated against rabies, and to call the nearest veterinary office if their pets show signs of rabies such as turning aggressive, biting objects, excessive salivation and in-coordination.

“Please do not dump your unwanted pets but contact the nearest veterinary office or local council to surrender them,” advised an officer of the department, Edward Tawang, during a brief meeting yesterday.

Those who have not had their dog vaccinated can bring their dogs to the nearest veterinary office for anti-rabies vaccination from 8.30am to 11.30am from Monday to Friday (except public holidays) or to the
nearest private veterinary clinics. Ops rabies Miri and Subis will be from Nov 10 to 20.

During the operation, the people are advised to confine their dogs within their house compounds.

Any dog found outside will be caught and removed.

Pet owners are told to ensure that their dogs are securely leashed whenever they walk their pets, which must be properly licensed.
