KUCHING: The Sarawak government has approved an allocation to transform the old State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Building into a Performing Arts Centre.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said this was to promote and encourage more young people to look into the potential of creative and performing arts entrepreneurship.

He said the centre will soon be tendered out by Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

“And once the centre is completed, it is expected to produce more youths who are innovative and creative,” he said.

Abang Johari was speaking at the Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development (MYSED) Appreciation, Engagement, and Collaboration Nite 2022 programme at Waterfront Hotel on Monday evening (Feb 21).

He said that Sarawak has also produced its very own television station, TV Sarawak (TVS) of which have already reached nine million local viewers including those from West Malaysia, Kalimantan and other neighbouring countries.

“That is why in the performing arts industry, we already have the platform for us to produce telemovies.  We can even have an exchange programme with other television stations from overseas once we (our telemovies) reach a certain standard,” he said.

“Apart from that, we can produce telemovies similar to the ones from South Korea, then this could create the feeling in the people wanting to watch the telemovies that are made in Sarawak.”

“As such, with this, we can create the spirit of entrepreneurship and the performing arts industry in the state,” he said.

Abang Johari also said that the state is committed to promote youth development and leadership, to ensure they are capable, competitive and ready for the future.

“We want our youth to be innovative, futuristic and be able to survive in any situation (overcome various challenges), and this is the kind of youth that we want in future,” he said.

Meanwhile, Abdul Karim, said there were a total of 55 youth associations and individuals in Sarawak have received allocation under the Sarawak Youth Creative Industry Fund (SYCIF).

“The SYCIF is to help and encourage the development and potential of creative and innovative youth in Sarawak,” he said.

Also present were Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development (MYSED)
Assistant Ministers Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu (Youth and Sports), and Dr Ripin Lamat (Entrepreneur Development) and Creative Industry and Performing Arts Assistant Minister Datuk Snowdan Lawan.
