BUKIT MERTAJAM: The case of an elderly woman who doggedly hawked food using a push cart in Permatang Pauh, caught the attention of the Seberang Perai Municipal Council which offered her a stall.

Dr Afif Bahardin

The Seberang Jaya assemblyman Dr Afif Bahardin handed the document for the stall to the woman Mariam Ayub, 62, at her house in Permatang Janggus near here. Also present were representatives of the council and the Department of Social Welfare.

Dr Afif said Mariam, and her son, Mohd Sahir, 34, were expected to start trading at the municipal stall in Permatang Pauh as early as next week.

“We are touched and sympathise with their situation. The way they carry out their activity was also not safe for them and others,’’ he told Bernama.

Besides the stall, the Department of Social Welfare would also take care of Mariam and her son’s health checks. Mariam is a diabetic while Mohd Sahir has learning disability or dyslexia.

The story of Mariam, who was forced to hawk food using a push cart on a road junction to support herself and her disabled son after her husband died, was highlighted in a Bernama article recently. – Bernama
