KUCHING: The relevant authorities in the state are closely monitoring the movement of four Sarawakians who were supposed to attend a Tabligh gathering in Sulawesi, Indonesia which has since been cancelled because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr James Jemut Masing said that the four male individuals went to Sulawesi on March 16 before the movement control order (MCO) was enforced on March 18.

“They have not returned yet and we are watching out for them. As our border posts will also be closed until March 31, we have instructed the army to monitor the areas just in case they return using illegal crossings,” he told reporters at Wisma Bapa Malaysia yesterday.

He also said the four Sarawakians were not part of the Tabligh gathering in Sri Petaling Mosque, Selangor which was participated by some 16,000 people including 609 Sarawakians.

“Once they return, they will be screened for Covid-19,” he said.

They must also undergo 14-day quarantine upon their return.

The Tabligh gathering at the Ijtima of Asia 2020 event in Sulawesi was schedule to take place from March 19 to 22 but was ordered cancelled on Thursday.

A Bernama report quoted Malaysian Ambassador to Indonesia Datuk Zainal Abidin Bakar saying efforts were ongoing to trace 83 Malaysians believed to have gone to Indonesia to attend the event.

“The Malaysian Embassy here is working with the local authorities in Sulawesi to ensure that the Malaysians who are already in Indonesia to attend the meeting that was scheduled for March 19 to 22 undergo health checks,” he said.
