BINTULU: Society for Rights of Indigenous People of Sarawak, or known by its acronym SCRIPS, will host a once-a-week, five-session online Sekolah Adat (custom) class.

“We hope that the programme will truly be a school on the way of life where participants will learn new things or deepen their knowledge.

“We will gradually, in the future, conduct physical classes when the health situation permits,” said SCRIPS director Michael M. Jok.

“SCRIPS has formulated a four-module education programme compromising Adat and Modern Living, Adat and Life in Sarawak, Adat and Basic Human and Constitutional Rights and Adat and Belief System – Modern and Traditional Religions.

“These modules have been developed to enlighten the participants on the importance of adaptation and adjustments of lifestyle.”

Michael also explained that SCRIPS was established to work among the indigenous people of Sarawak to defend, promote and develop native rights.

“We have conducted many awareness seminars on rights, training of leaders, capacity building, documentation of community oral history, and community mappings for the indigenous people throughout Sarawak.

“The cause of poverty in Sarawak is a lack of necessary knowledge and know-how in dealing with modern Malaysia.

“Transforming a nation from a rural-based community into an urban community can be traumatic when the people are not socially equipped to adapt to modern living in an urban lifestyle.

“Therefore, after years of serving the indigenous community, SCRIPS has decided to develop more systematic and lifelong learning called Sekolah Adat Programme (SAP).”

“Our initial classes will be conducted online to accommodate participants from different parts of the country and are held once a week for five sessions,” he added.
