KUCHING: Sarawak on Tuesday detected one new positive Covid-19 case, a male Indonesian national, through contact tracing in connection with a positive case reported on June 7.

“This involves a new cluster of foreign workers in Sarawak. As such the Sarawak Health Department will conduct Active Case Detection (ACD) operation at a construction site at Jalan Kereta Api and where the workers are staying at Sungai Moyan,” said Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas during his daily Covid-19 press conference at the old State Legislative Assembly (DUN) building yesterday (June 9).

He said although there was no clear evidence yet, some illegal immigrants might have entered the state through ‘rat trails’.

“This is still a suspicion, but I warn employers that the authorities such as the Police, Immigration, State Security Unit and the Health Department health will be more aggressive in monitoring the borders,” he said.

He said SDMC would make sure the state borders with Kalimantan would be strictly guarded to prevent any illegal crossing.

In the meantime, Uggah said the total number of Covid-19 positive cases in Sarawak was at 556, while no new recovery and discharged cases were reported and the number of recoveries remained at 525 peple or 94.42 percent.

“There are 62 more persons under investigation (PUI) reported with four still waiting for their test results,” he said.

He said there were 196 persons under surveillance (PUS) registered at quarantine hotels, bringing the total of 2,060 PUS being placed at 38 hotels throughout the state to date.

A total number of 13,753 PUS has completed their quarantine and were allowed to return home.
