KUCHING: One Covid-19 positive case was detected in Bintulu yesterday (Aug 30), bringing the cumulative total of positive cases to 699 throughout Sarawak.

State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), in a statement yesterday (Aug 30), said the identified case (Case 699) involves a 33-year-old Filipino man, working as an able body on the Seri Alam LNG Tank Vessel.

“The case does not show any signs and symptoms. He signed on at the vessel at the Toyoma Shinko Japan Port on Aug 1.

“The case underwent rT-PCR (reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction) screening on Aug 21 and the result came back negative for Covid-19 on Aug 23.

“The case then underwent a second rT-PCR screening on August 29 and the results found that the case was positive for Covid-19 on the same day,” the statement said.

SDMC said the case was tied to the Alam Cluster in Bintulu, bringing the total number of cases in the cluster to eight.

SCMC added that there was also one recovered case that has been discharged from Sibu Hospital.

“This brings the cumulative total of recovered and discharged patients to 663 or 94.85 percent,” said SDMC.

Seventeen people are still receiving treatment at hospital isolation wards — 11 at Bintulu Hospital, five at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) and one at Miri Hospital.

“The death toll remained at 19 or 2.72 percent,” SDMC added.

A total of five new persons-under-investigation (PUI) were also reported while two are still awaiting laboratory test results.

SDMC also informed that 45 new persons-under-surveillance (PUS) had been checked into hotels to undergo quarantine.

This brings the total number of PUS at 14 hotels to 714, while 22,937 had completed their quarantine period.
