One perishes after collision with 10-tonne lorry

SEBUYAU: A female passenger died upon impact when the sport utility vehicle (SUV) that she was riding on collided with a lorry here yesterday.

The accident, involving a Toyota FJ Cruiser and a 10-tonne lorry, occurred at 11.45am at Kampung Kakus junction.

A team of six firefighters from Simunjan fire station led by PBK II (KUP) Wan Hossien Wan Zain were despatched to the scene.

Upon their arrival, the driver and the passengers were already removed from the vehicle by members of the public.

The SUV’s male driver, 23-year-old Izat Al Hakim Khairul Aziz, who is the son of Kalaka assemblyman Datuk Abdul Wahab Aziz, was found trapped in his seat and later rushed to Simunjan Hospital for further treatment.

Meanwhile, the front-seat female passenger, Datin Fatimah Zainudin, 70, only suffered minor injuries and was also sent to Simunjan Hospital. The two passengers in the backseat were also removed from the vehicle.

Unfortunately, one of the backseat passengers, identified as Poziah Udin, 64, was pronounced dead at the scene, while Kartinah Firdaus,68, suffered severe injuries and was sent to Sarawak Heart Centre in Kota Samarahan.

The lorry driver, Boon Kee Nam, was unharmed in the collision. The firefighters only moved the damaged vehicle to the side of the road to ease the traffic flow.
