KUCHING: A One Stop Early Intervention Centre for children with special needs will be set up this year.

The project is a corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme by Petronas.

Minister of Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said the centre would include a diagnostic centre, early intervention centre, preschool, play area, therapy centre including a swimming therapy.

“My ministry will be making a presentation on the centre to Petronas today (18/6),” she told New Sarawak Tribune, yesterday.

Following the two-day workshop at Grand Margherita Hotel yesterday, Fatimah said among other matter discussed covered the establishment of state owned primary school or learning centres for children with special needs.

“Gap analysis, philosophical and conceptual framework, physical facilities including sport facilities, personnel required were among the items discussed as well,” she said.

She added her ministry will also be visiting other centre or primary schools overseas for benchmarking purposes.

“The state owned primary school or learning centres for children with special needs must be endorsed by the Cabinet first,” she said.

Participations of the workshop included educationist, medical doctors, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), officers from education department, welfare department, and the ministry’s childhood development senior officers.
