KUCHING: The Magistrates’ Court sentenced a man to 12 months’ imprisonment and a RM1,000 fine for attempting to rob a woman at a convenience store two years ago.

Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi meted out the sentence after Faizul, 24, from Kampung Sungai Ladong pleaded guilty today.

According to the charge sheet, the accused — under Section 393 of the Penal Code — tried to rob a 24-year-old woman at a convenience store in Jalan Canna, Tabuan Tranquility around 10.55am on Dec 30, 2020.

Based on the case brief, the victim was working in the convenience store when the accused entered with his helmet on and pretended to buy groceries.

The accused later approached the victim, pulled her head scarf and threatened her at knifepoint, demanding that she open the cash register.

However, the victim defended herself and managed to escape the store with her colleague and shouted for help from the public. The victim then reported the case to the police.

The accused was eventually arrested this year in connection with a motorcycle theft case on March 8. Investigations found that the accused also involved in the attempted robbery case reported two years ago.

Meanwhile, in the same court, the accused was also sentenced to eight months’ in prison for possessing a stolen motorcycle.

Inspector Nur Syafiqa Nyaie Ilin prosecuted the case while the accused was unrepresented.
