KUCHING: Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) is now compounding members of the public who violate Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOPs).

This was told by MPKS chairman Datuk Peter Minos on Monday (May 10) who stated that the authority was given by the Ministry of Local Government and Housing under the Protection of Public Health Ordinance 1999.

“Since last Friday (May 7), 14 individuals in Samarahan have been compounded RM1,500 each. The ones who have been fined are the really difficult and recalcitrant types, otherwise warnings would have sufficed.

“There are certain people in society who cannot be fully or partly bothered with Covid-19 SOPs as well as rules set by the Ministry of Health (MOH) and Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC). Only fines work on this really difficult lot as words and warnings do not.”

Minos added that MPKS was helping the police who cannot act or work alone.

He pointed out that the law must come in to fine and compound those who were doing as they pleased without much care of the consequences.

“To me, we cannot allow a few in our midst to do what they please so the law must be enforced. If not, we can never ever win the war against Covid-19.”

Minos also reminded the people to do their part in helping the government to fight the pandemic.

“Some are too quick with hammering MOH and SDMC on small slips without knowing that both agencies work day and night almost non-stop.

“So, the least that we in the local councils can do is our small part. We float or sink together with the government and people.”
