Only one day for CNY gatherings; limited to family

KUCHING: The Chinese New Year (CNY) celebration in Sarawak which falls on Feb 1 this year is again only allowed on the first day and limited to immediate family members only.

The standard operating procedure (SOP) is almost similar to the one laid down by the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) last year.

The SOP issued by the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) and the Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR) was released on Thursday (Jan 13).

“For CNY Eve dinner, only close family members are allowed. The number of family members permitted in a residence is at 50 per cent capacity according to the size of the house and compound.

“Family reunions at hotels or restaurants for CNY Eve celebration are to involve close family members only, complying with the Food Sector SOP issued by the Ministry of Public Health, Housing and Local Government,” read the SOP.

Similarly, Chap Goh Mei celebration is only allowed among close family members at 50 per cent capacity at any one time according to the size of the house and compound as well as with physical distancing of one metre.

To curb the spread of COVID-19, the host must prepare thermal scanners and record the attendance and details of close family members through MySejahtera or an attendance book.

Family members with a temperature exceeding 37.5ºC or who are exhibiting any symptoms are not permitted to enter the residence and are advised to visit the nearest hospital or clinic.

The host is also obligated to arrange seating in compliance with physical distancing of no less than one metre. In addition, those in attendance must wear face masks and practise hand hygiene with soap or hand sanitiser.

Ventilation according to the standard set by SDMC must be ensured.

Close family members are encouraged to undergo self-testing with Antigen Rapid Test Kits (RTK-Ag) before visiting.

As for prayer ceremonies at houses of worship, the SOP issued by SDMC and UNIFOR must be adhered to.

With regard to CNY bazaars, the relevant SOP issued by the Ministry of Public Health, Housing and Local Government on Jan 6 must be followed.
