KUCHING: Schools are not allowed to close even though Kuching Division has been declared a Covid-19 red zone.

According to the deputy director of the State Education Department Dr Abang Hut Abang Engkeh, schools cannot simply close unless the Ministry of Education issues a closure notice.

“The closure of the school depends on the situation and the ministry itself. The schools that are allowed to be closed are the ones that have Covid-19 cases.

“For now, all I can say is that it is up to the ministry to decide,” he said.

After a student from SMK Wira Penrissen and another at SK Jalan Haji Baki were found Covid-19, both schools were ordered to close by the State Education Department.

The closure took effect starting from Oct 26 until Nov 1 to allow disinfecting operations to be done at the respective schools.
