LUNDU: Billy Sujang showed what it takes to be a caring and concerned wakil rakyat.

Despite battling illness and fatigue, the Opar assemblyman was determined to lead a field visit alongside the Kampung Stungkor Baru village development and security committee (JKKK), the Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB), and the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Authority (GKCDA) to assess the urgent need for upgrading the gravity pipe system in Kampung Stungkor Baru.

The ageing PVC pipes, over three decades old, were prone to frequent leaks, necessitating replacement.

Ahead of the visit, Lundu JBALB officer-in-charge Hastomo Tommy outlined the details of the upgrading project.

He said the project, totalling RM550,000, includes rebuilding a water dam, installing one filtration tank, two storage tanks, five kilometres of high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes with four inches in diameter, three kilometres of HDPE pipes (three inches in diameter), and household pipe installations.

Billy emphasised the project’s importance, highlighting its approval under the GKCDA due to its vital role in addressing the needs of the rural populace, particularly in the village, amidst a growing population and deteriorating infrastructure.

During the site visit, JBALB identified key water catchment areas, determined optimal locations for filtration and storage tanks, and finalised plans for the dam.

The main pipeline route will leverage existing paths, with minor adjustments made in challenging terrain.

The journey, spanning 15 km through rugged terrain, culminated in the water catchment area, where the entourage was warmly welcomed by JKKK members with a feast featuring traditional dishes like ‘ayam pansuh’ (bamboo-cooked chicken) and grilled chicken wings.
