KUCHING: Despite their ideological differences, Sarawak’s elected representatives came together to celebrate the Gawai Dayak open house.
This was evident today when state Democratic Action Party (DAP) chairman Chong Chieng Jen and Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong attended the Gawai Dayak open house hosted by Dayak leaders from the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) at the Borneo Kuching Convention Center (BCCK).
When met by reporters, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the people of Sarawak are very supportive of one another, especially during celebrations.
“People of many cultures and religious backgrounds come here not only to eat, but also to develop community harmony and learn about each other’s customs.
“We shall be able to live together more peacefully and unitedly as a result of this understanding and culture,” he said.
Uggah went on to say that regardless of whether it is Hari Raya or Gawai Dayak open house, it is enjoyed by people of all races and it also strengthens Sarawakians’ unity.
He added that the most essential thing at this moment is for people to focus their efforts and energies on ensuring the success of the Post COVID-19 Development Strategic 2030 (PCDS 2030).
“This matter necessitates people’s solidarity, thus today (the Gawai Dayak open house) reflects our unity in diversity,” he stressed.
