BELADIN: The federal government through the Ministry of Finance is urged to open more bank branches as well as automated teller machines (ATMs) in the rural districts.
According to Kota Samarahan MP Rubiah Wang, the need for facilities such as bank branches and ATMs, especially in rural areas, is very important following the recent Covid-19 pandemic.
“This matter has also been voiced by all 18 GPS MPs in the Dewan Rakyat recently and we strongly urge the federal government to consider the proposal as they are very much needed by the rural population, especially during difficult times such as the recent movement control order (MCO) period.
“It was always the intention of the state government to make sure that ATMs would be available throughout Sarawak.
“However, it would be up to the Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) to decide whether it would be cost-effective to set up a bank or even installing an ATM in any area,” she said at the Beting Maro state constituency-level Sarawak Kita Empun (SKE) programme here, on Monday.
Apart from, ATMs, Rubiah, who is also SKE chairperson, appealed to the federal government to consider the installation of cash deposit machines (CDMs) in rural areas.
