MIRI: Miri Police Headquarters (IPD Miri) inaugurated Ops Jalan Raya and Ops Selamat on Monday (April 8), scheduled to run for six days in conjunction with the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration.
The launch of the operations is a proactive measure to ensure the safety and security of communities during the festive period.
This operation combines efforts from law enforcement agencies to address two critical aspects: reducing road accidents and preventing criminal activities.
Miri OCPD ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said for the Road Safety Ops, they have identified five areas to conduct the Ops Jalan Raya: Jalan Miri-Pujut; Jalan Miri By-pass; Jalan Bakam; Miri Coastal Road and Pan Borneo Highway.
Meanwhile, based on statistics released by the IPD Miri, there has been a noticeable improvement in road safety from 2022 to 2023.
In 2022, a total of 60 accident cases were recorded in Miri, highlighting the prevalence of road incidents during that period.
However, in a promising trend, the number decreased to 53 in 2023, indicating a reduction in road accidents within Miri District.
For the Ops Selamat, the presence of police will be increased in residential areas as part of their crime prevention strategies.
ACP Alexson said police may also conduct vehicle inspections to ensure roadworthiness and compliance with safety regulations.
Simultaneously, crime prevention measures are strengthened to safeguard homes and properties while families are away visiting relatives or attending festive gatherings.
“This includes increased police presence in residential areas, community outreach programmes to educate residents on crime prevention strategies, and collaboration with neighbourhood watch groups to enhance vigilance.”
Police are also urging the public, especially those returning to their villages or hometowns to celebrate Hari Raya, to prioritise their safety and that of their loved ones.
“A crucial piece of advice is to inform the police about travel plans by filling out the Volunteer Smart Phone (VSP) form or visit the nearest police station or they can call 085-43400 /085-43373.”
