Ops Kontraban nets RM1.37 mln worth of uncustomed goods

KUCHING: Marine police seized contraband cigarettes, alcoholic beverages and fireworks worth RM1.37 million in raids at separate locations last Thursday (Aug 5).

Sarawak Marine Police Region 5 commander ACP Zulfikar Mohd Ghazali said two men were arrested in the operations codenamed ‘Ops Kontraban’, held in Sri Aman and Limbang.

The first operation took place around 10.50am at a premises in Jalan Perumahan Rakyat Fasa 1, Sri Aman.

“A marine police intelligence team raided the premises and arrested a 27-year-old man believed to be the caretaker.

“The team found 702 cartons of various duty-not-paid alcoholic beverages stacked on the floor.

“The beverages worth RM113,366 and the suspect were handed over to Sri Aman police headquarters (IPD) for further action,” he said.

Meanwhile in Limbang, a marine police team raided a bird house at KM7, Jalan Kubong around 5.30pm.

Zulfikar said the team found 153 boxes of various brands of cigarettes, 116 liquor bottles and 12 boxes of fireworks inside the premises.

Aside from that, a 51-year-old man was arrested by the team for further action.

“All the goods worth over RM1,263,500 were taken to Limbang Marine Police headquarters,” he said.

Both cases are being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.
