MIRI: Thirty-two divers from various agencies including media representatives joined in the third edition of ‘Ops Nemo’ to remove ghost nets from the sea bed yesterday.

They comprised five local media representatives, ten personnel from Miri Fire and Rescue department, Sarawak Forestry Corporation (3), Borneo Ghost Net Hunter (1), Coco Dive Miri (6) and seven volunteers from Singapore, Brunei and Miri.

The group sailed early yesterday and headed for the diving site in three boats, after a simple launching ceremony by Assistant Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin at Marina Jetty here.

Their aim was to get rid of as many ghost nets as possible from the diving site, located about 19 nautical miles off Miri waters.

In the ‘Ops Nemo II’ held in May this year, the volunteers managed to collect a total 140kg of ghost nets from the sea bed at the diving site.

Lee, in his brief speech lauded the efforts made by the volunteers which would help inspire people and create public awareness on the danger of ghost nets to the marine life.

“Ghost nets are the silent killer to our marine life and it is crucial for us to initiate such effort,” he said.

He noted that ghost nets that were left abandoned and entangled on coral reefs were capable of trapping marine life.
