Organisers eye Malaysia Book of Records

SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) and Sibu Remote Control Sports Club (SRCSC) will attempt to break into the Malaysia Book of Records with the most number of boats participating in the Borneo International Remote Control Powerboat Tournament 2017.

The current record for the most number of boats participating in the remote control powerboat tournament is held by Melaka with 522 boats.

According to Visit Sibu Year (VSY) 2017 co-organiser, Councilor Wong Hie Ping, a total of 650 boats will take part in the race which will be held from 28 to 30 April at Permai Lake Garden here.

“The event not only attracts the locals but also remote control boat enthusiasts from around the world.

“The race has received strong response from Sibu, Kapit, Kanowit, Kuching, Serian, Batu Niah, Baram, Miri, Bintulu, Labuan, Limbang, and also from Peninsular Malaysia.

“On top of that, participants from Thailand, Dubai, USA, Indonesia, Vietnam and Brunei will also take part in the race,” she told a press conference held at SMC Office here, yesterday.

Wong said this would be the first biggest remote control powerboat tournament in Southeast Asia.

“So, we are going to break the Malaysia Book of Records with a total of 650 boats taking part in the Borneo International Remote Control Powerboat Tournament 2017,” she said, adding that an officer of the Malaysia Book of Records would be present during the tournament.

The tournament is divided into seven categories, namely, Category A (79 boats), Category B (74 boats), Category D (86 boats), Cateogry E & G (145 boats), Category F (90 boats), Category H (106 boats) and Category I (70 boats).

The top three winners of each category will receive RM5,000, RM3,000 and RM1,500 respectively,  plus a trophy each while the fourth to sixth place winners will walk away with RM800, RM400 and RM150 respectively, plus a trophy each.

For another category, Category T (Team Event) – Team Challenge Tournament Cup, teams of five to 10 members each can be made up of mixed participants and the winner will receive RM8,000.

Also present at the press conference were SMC chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King, organising chairman Peter Ling, Sibu Remote Control Sports Club chaairman Andrew Ling Ching Ping and international race director from Kuching Abang Nawawi Bolhassan.
