MIRI: Participants from Indonesia and Sabah were among the early birds who have arrived in Miri for the Sarawak Premier Cup of the 22nd Sarawak International Junior Golf Championship 2022.

The golf sporting event will be held at Eastwood Valley Golf and Country Club from Nov 29 to Dec 1.

In a press statement today, the organisers said among those present to welcome the participants were the Sarawak Golf Association president Hoan Kee Hock, the tournament director Ting Bang Kong as well as the advisor Datuk Rabeahtul Aloya Abbas.

According to Hoan, the remainder of the participating teams are expected to arrive today (Nov 27), and the golfers’ practice rounds will take place the following day (Nov 28), after they have registered for their respective categories.

The number of participants, who came from Pakistan, India, Thailand, Vietnam, Chinese Taipeh, Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei Darussalam, Sabah and the local host Sarawak, also exceeded the association’s expectations.

“We are satisfied with the encouraging response, even though the event was last held in 2019, before the pandemic forced us to postpone it until this year.

“On behalf of the association, we would like to extend our gratitude to the Sarawak government and the Premier (Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg) for their continuous support towards this event, which is one of the most popular junior golf tournaments in this region,” said Hoan on the event, which is also on Sarawak’s Tourism Calendar.

This year’s competition is open to local and international junior amateur golfers who are competing in four different categories, namely Category A (15 to 17 years old), Category B (13 to 14 years old), Category C (12 years old and below) and Special Category (18 to 21 years old).

The event is supported by the government through the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak and sanctioned by the Malaysia Golf Association (MGA) and World Amateur Golf Ranking.
