KOTA SAMARAHAN: More than 110 tons of rubbish are collected daily by the Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS).
That, according to MPKS chairman Datuk Peter Minos, is a lot of rubbish collected in a day.
“I don’t want people to say that MPKS is not doing its job,” he added while officiating at the “Green & Beautiful” Community Development Programme organised by MPKS here today.
Minos also revealed, “We at MPKS received several complaints about rubbish thrown at the roadside.”
He hoped that some of the rubbish collected could be turned into fertilisers and be used in agriculture to boost the socio-economic status of the hawkers, especially in Bandar Riyal Market.
Minos also urged the residents including university students to look after the cleanliness of Kota Samarahan and make it respected and admired by other towns.
“Kota Samarahan wants to be a tourist attraction one day,” he said.
Chairman of the “Green & Beautiful” Community Development Programme Dr Florince Christy explained that the event was a continuation of the previous composting programme at Bandar Riyal and Kota Samarahan Wet Market.
MPKS, she added, was concerned about the rubbish thrown at the roadsides.
She also confirmed that more than 110 tons of rubbish was collected by the council daily.
“Therefore, we hope with the involvement of students from universities, they will help us spread the culture of maintaining the cleanliness of this district,” said Florince.
Involved in the programme were students from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) and Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Kota Samarahan, Angkatan Mahasiswa Anti Rasuah (Amar) and Institut Pendidikan Guru (IPG), Batu Lintang, Tun Abdul Razak and the Rajang Campus.
