KUCHING: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has called up over 20 individuals in its investigation into the awarding of contracts for the supply and management of government vehicles to Spanco Sdn Bhd.

MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the inquiry centres on the processes leading to Spanco’s selection and the recent contract cancellation disputes.

“We are delving into the circumstances surrounding Spanco’s acquisition of these contracts, as reported to us. The decision-makers of the time are of particular interest to our investigation,” Azam said during a press conference after the Cakna Rasuah: SPRM Bersama Media Sarawak Programme at the Pullman Hotel today (Feb 6).

He revealed plans to summon individuals involved from as far back as 1998 or 1999, to uncovering the truth through witness statements and factual verification.

“Our primary aim is to explore the current concerns, a task that demands thorough examination,” he said.

Despite the ongoing investigation, Azam confirmed no charges have been brought against Spanco thus far. However, he noted that related company and individual accounts have been frozen, asserting that MACC’s role does not extend to contract cancellations.

“Our focus remains on ensuring the continuous supply and maintenance of government vehicles, crucial for supporting government operations,” he added.

Spanco has been the government’s vehicle supply and maintenance concessionaire since 1993. Following the expiration of its contract in 2019, an open tender led to a temporary award to a consortium of Berjaya Group and Naza Sdn Bhd.

This was later revoked in 2020, with Spanco resecuring the contract.

The situation escalated when Berjaya’s founder, Tan Sri Vincent Tan, sued the Ministry of Finance and Spanco over the terminated Letter of Intent (LOI), alleging unfair practices in awarding the contract to Spanco at a higher price.
