KUCHING: The Kuching Toastmasters Club’s Youth Communication Camp (YCC) will be making its return this year after taking a hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The tenth iteration of YCC, which will be held from Sept 16 to 18 at Borneo Happy Farm, headed by its organising chairman, Sahil Dev, will host more than 200 campers and 70 facilitators both local and overseas including Myanmar, the United States of America, India, Nigeria, Canada, Australia and Brunei Darussalam.

The programme designed by the principal facilitator of the camp Mike Lim, a veteran broadcaster and former national news director of NTV7, will centre on the YCC’s motto of ‘Get a life and live the dream’, which will cover multiple areas such as public speaking, leadership development and talents showcasing.

“This training will culminate in a speech competition, ‘Lend Me Your Ears’, which encompasses two main categories that are prepared speech and impromptu speech.

“The winner will be awarded the YB Karim Hamzah Challenge Shield, named after its patron, the Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah,” said Sahil Dev.

He also revealed that it is not all indoor learning and their camp will encompass the wider holistic development of the campers.

YCC Communications director Eden Voon acknowledged the generous support of the major sponsors such as the Ministry for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Mitsubishi Corporation, SACOFA Sdn Bhd, Sarawak Energy Berhad, Barron’s Private Space, Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang and Hock Seng Lee.

“Without their support, the camp would have just remained a dream,” Eden added.

Since its inception in 2012, the YCC has impacted over 1500 students in the areas of public speaking, leadership development and showcasing talents.
