Over 250 attend joint public forum

SRI AMAN: More than 250 people attended a public forum organised by KPJ Kuching Specialist Hospital and Simanggang Soon Heng Society at Seri Simanggang Hotel here, recently. The programme which achieved yet another milestone was also supported by TCN Premier Group was aimed at enhancing public awareness of certain health conditions and giving full attention to their prevention, detection and treatment. According to President of Simanggang Soon Heng Society, Mr Tay Chiew Hua, KPJ Kuching and Simanggang Soon Heng Society had similar collaboration last year.

The organisers were also confident that the public forum had enhanced the people’s health awareness, more knowledgeable and understand better their health and making Sri Aman a better place to live in.

Three specialists from KPJ Kuching Specialist Hospital were also present as speakers for the forum namely, Dr Shehab Phung Chee Wei, Resident Consultant General & Laparoscopic Surgeon who talked on the topic “Let’s Talk About Colon Cancer”, Dr Chan Siew Hong, Resident Consultant (Urologist) who talked on “Are Kidney Stones Serious and Tips to Prevent Them” and Dr Lee Woo Guan, Resident Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon who talked on “New Options and Treatment of Knee Pain”.

Colorectal cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the world and second most common form of cancer in Malaysia after breast cancer and a major cause of morbidity and mortality. As a noted speaker and expert on colorectal surgery, Dr Shehab shared his knowledge and provided tips about colorectal cancer and how it can be prevented and treated.

Meanwhile, Dr Chan Siew Hong pointed out that kidney stone is one of the most common urological conditions, if left untreated kidney stone can result in severe pain and may lead to kidney failure. “Fortunately there are steps you can take to prevent this common condition,” Dr Chan said and urged the public not to take kidney stone lightly but to seek medical advice when required.

With today’s increasingly active society, the number of knee problems is increasing. According to Dr Lee, knee pain has a wide variety of specific causes and treatments.

“Arthritis is one of the common causes of knee pain and when left untreated, arthritis can be debilitating. The good news is that new treatments are now available, which can help make arthritis and the symptoms more manageable,” Dr Lee said. Other activities featured during the forum were lucky draws, free basic health screening and door gifts. “We are very thankful and appreciative to the support of the people of Sri Aman in making this public forum a success.

We strongly believe this public forum has benefited the community of Sri Aman. “Patient health, patient safety and comfort are the hospital’s main concerns and KPJ Kuching Specialist Hospital continually monitors and evaluates its performance to achieve this outcome,” said General Manager of KPJ Kuching Specialist Hospital, Nurhazimah Mahat.
