KUCHING: Over 300 students will get together for the second edition of Sarawak Community Innovation Engineering Exhibition (Science) at The Hills Shopping Mall here from Aug 17-18.
Organised by The Learning Curve (TLC) and sponsored by Sarawak Energy, Science was introduced last year and targeted at creative young people keen in science and mechanics. It also aims to encourage interest and innovative thinking in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
The event will run from 10am to 5pm daily and admission is free.
The innovative format includes the formation of teams from various schools throughout Sarawak that have collaborated over six months to design, programme, assemble, and showcase their engineering projects with assigned theme projects. This year’s event is themed ‘Smart Home and Future Living’.
The various teams will congregate here to display their creations, participate in workshops and games and compete with other teams. The event is open to interested visitors and students.
Students from primary and secondary schools from throughout Sarawak have formed 80 teams to participate in various challenges and competitions. This year, participants come from one primary school and 35 secondary schools in Kuching, Betong, Mukah, Bintulu and Miri.
For the first time, tertiary level students from University Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) and a private school, Mont Trinity School Damansara from Kuala Lumpur, are also involved in the event by showcasing their inventions.
Unimas students will exhibit their smart toilet invention while Mont Trinity students will showcase their smart home gadgets.
“Sarawak Energy is supportive of youth development and education especially in subjects related to science, technology and engineering. By supporting Science, we hope to create greater interest in STEM education and showcase its application in daily lives,” said Sarawak Energy’s group chief operating officer Lu Yew Hung.
Sarawak’s energy developer and utility provider is also investing in the future by providing scholarships and supporting other educational development programmes.
