Over 600 summonses issued in statewide Merdeka traffic op

KUCHING: The 2021 Ambang Merdeka Special Ops carried out by the Sarawak Contingent Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department has yielded a total of 617 summonses for various offenses throughout the state.

Sarawak Traffic Investigation and Enforcement chief Supt Alexson Naga Chabu said the summonses were issued in 68 operations carried out between Aug 28 and Sept 1.

“The operation involved 268 officers and members of the department throughout the districts in Sarawak and 3,063 people and 2,635 vehicles were inspected.

“In addition, 18 motorcycles were seized under Section 60 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for committing various modification offenses, while a man was arrested under Section 108 (e) of the same Act for using a false registration number in Sibu,” he said on Wednesday (Sept 1).

“Operational targets involve major offenses that contribute to road accidents such as driving over the speed limit, crossing double lines, not stopping for red lights, driving under the influence of alcohol, illegal racing and all motorcycle-related offenses.”

Supt Alexson also reminded road users to comply with traffic laws and regulations as well as set Covid-19 standard operating procedures.

“Stern action will be taken against any individual found to have violated traffic laws and regulations as well as Covid-19 SOP.”
