Sarawak has secured 21 business events during the first quarter of this year, which translates to approximately RM30,330,300 in direct delegate expenditure, which will be disbursed from 2019 to 2022.

Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the revenue would ultimately return to Sarawak in both downstream and upstream tourism businesses.

“The business events won will develop Sarawak’s seven key focus areas on urban development, redevelopment, environment, social, industry, agriculture, service industry, digital economy and other sectors in line with the state’s vision and direction,” he said when delivering his ministry’s winding-up speech during the DUN sitting.

He said Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak) brought in 83 events last year, bringing in revenue totalling RM98,935,850.

“One of our key success factors includes the business events supported by the State Convention Fund, and in 2018, the state sponsored over RM4,624,500 for 39 conferences.”

Abdul Karim said Sarawak had a total of 70 business events last year, totalling close to 31,129 delegates with a direct delegate spending of over RM101,229,280.

He said in line with the new direction of the business events sector in Sarawak, BESarawak was currently focusing on the power of meeting and conference beyond the profit it generated through two powerful campaigns such as the Redefining Global Tribes, and Visit Sarawak Campaign.

“With this, the local and global business event industries are expected to flourish under stronger profiling and greater global exposure while achieving objectives with greater impact,” he stressed.
