BINTULU: Marine police seized over RM750,000 worth of duty-not-paid cigarettes from a shipping container parked at the roadside along Jalan Bintulu-Tatau today.

Sarawak Marine Police Region 5 commander ACP Zulfikar Mohd Ghazali in a statement, said that an operation codenamed ‘Ops Kontraban’ was carried out around 4am after the intelligence unit spotted the container.

“The team found that the container was locked and they waited for about two hours to see whether the owner would claim the container.

“However, no one came forward and it prompted the team to cut off the locks and inspect the goods inside.

“Inspections led to the finding of 105 boxes of duty-not-paid cigarettes worth RM787,500 inside,” he said.

Zulfikar pointed out that the seized contraband and container were taken to the Bintulu Marine Headquarters.

All of the seizures were handed over to Bintulu police headquarters (IPD) for further investigation under Section 135 (1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.

The container with 105 boxes of duty-not-paid cigarettes, was handed over to Bintulu IPD for further action.
