Overhead bridge near school soon

KUCHING: An overhead bridge will soon be built near SMK Tun Abang Haji Openg to enhance the safety of students and teachers when crossing the road.

Utilities Assistant Minister (Water Supply) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said the overhead bridge is one of the scopes of the B package of the Kuching Inner Ring Road Project.

“This overhead bridge is important to ensure the safety of road users, especially students and teachers of the school,” he said.

He said this after being briefed by the Public Works Department (JKR) and representatives of the school on Thursday (June 18).

Dr Abdul Rahman, who is also Assistant Minister at the Chief Minister’s Department (Islamic Affairs and DBKU), said besides the overhead bridge, the project also includes works to upgrade the single lane road to double lane along the 5.18km stretch from the Mardi roundabout to the Demak roundabout.

He said, the upgrading works will also be done along the 2.07km stretch from the Demak roundabout to Gersik roundabout.

“Overall, the road upgrading project involves a total of 7.25km and will improve the flow of traffic from Jalan Sultan Tengah to Jalan Tun Salahuddin,” he said.

Besides that, a few traffic lights are also built while a bridge will also be built to cross the Siol River while some street lights will be added.

Dr Abdul Rahman thanked the state government for funding the project.
