KUCHING: The signing of the Framework Service Agreement between Sarawak Microelectronics Design (SMD) Semiconductor and Melexis Technologies NV, Belgium signifies Sarawak’s commitment to a sustainable global partnership.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said it marks the beginning of a robust collaboration between the state government and Melexis in semiconductor and chip design.

He said it will continue to be an important industry that will transform and push Sarawak towards a sustainable environment and higher-value economy.

“We can also work together to preserve our environment and explore other opportunities in terms of technology. Though Sarawak is a small country, we are blessed with resources.

“We need the technology and expertise to add value to our resources thereby contributing to the world’s need for a green environment,” he said.

He said this at the launch of Sarawak Microelectronics Design (SMD) and signing ceremony of a Framework Service Agreement with Melexis Technologies NV, Belgium at TEGAS Digital Village today.

Abang Johari noted that the partnership between the state government and Melexis could not be more timely.

Recalling his visit to Tessenderlo, Belgium in August this year, he said the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development had signed a memorandum of agreement with Melexis.

“While the rest of the world was preoccupied with their agendas, Sarawak’s goal of aligning with a universal appeal for a sustainable, inclusive economy was never jeopardised.

“It gives me great pleasure to inform everyone that as a result of our dedication and perseverance, we have not only aligned ourselves with the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) No 8 of advocating its Decent Work and Economic Growth node, but in terms of leading a future-proof nation, today our allies in the global semiconductor and systems industry have joined us to inaugurate our partnership – an enterprise of excellence,” he said.

Also present at the ceremony were Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Roland Sagah, Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Francis Harden Hollis, as well as Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment cum Chairman of TEGAS Datuk Len Talif Salleh.
