KUCHING: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Kuching Branch will leave the decision on who would contest the Padungan seat in the Sarawak polls to the central leadership.

Its deputy chairman Bong Lian Huan and treasurer Jong Yean Pin have been touted as the potential candidates.

“So far, there is no confirmation yet (on which one of us will be picked),” Bong told the media on Friday (May 7) after distributing 150 carnations to female hawkers at the Petanak Market here in conjunction with the coming Mother’s Day celebration.

“While waiting for their (leadership) decision, as far as we are concerned, at our level, what we can do is continue to engage with the grassroots and address their issues. We try to do our best.”

Both Bong and Jong are also Kuching City South Council councillors, and he added that they would use their capacity as councillors to help solve issues faced by the communities.

Jong, who was also present on Friday, said he had no problem working closely with Bong should the latter be picked and vice versa.

Bong chipped in: “What is important is to help each other and there should not be an issue on the matter.”

“Our culture in Kuching SUPP is that whoever is picked as a candidate, everyone will pitch in,” he added.

The Padungan seat is currently held by Wong King Wei, formerly of Democratic Action Party (DAP).

Wong won the seat in 2011 and retained it in 2016. However, he left DAP in July last year and is now an independent assemblyman.
