KUCHING: A Facebook account under the name “Adam Yap” sent a threatening message yesterday morning to Padungan assemblyman Wong King Wei, stating that he and all his family members should die.
The same person, believed to be a fake account holder, also called him a “rocket dog” replying to Wong who wrote last night that no one is above the law.
Wong saw the message written on his Facebook page yesterday at about 8.30am.
Describing the “attackers” as enemies of DAP, Wong after lodging a police report said in a press conference outside the police One Stop Centre said there was a man who was brought to court on Wednesday on the grounds of defamation.
He said since last August and December, there appeared to be a group of people who were vigorously attacking him on Facebook and other social medias, making various claims that were damaging to his reputation.
He then lodged a police report against one of them, a Chin Siaw Hong, who was brought to court yesterday. Chin pleaded not guilty and the case is pending in court.
“I believe that the group was angry that Chin was brought to court so the assaults become more aggressive. They accused me of hindering freedom of speech. They were making defamation remarks before but this time it is getting too dangerous as they have threatened the safety of my family and I,” he said.
Wong added that he was disappointed with the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) for dragging their feet on the reports he made last year.
He also said he had lodged a police report in August and six more in December, all of which were fake accounts on Facebook but no one has been identified yet. The authority, he noted, seemed to be taking their sweet time conducting the investigation.
“The group is taking revenge on me for taking one of them to court but the inefficiency of the police and MCMC is causing more of such ‘attackers’ to surface.
“As a public figure, I am having a hard time trying to seek justice and what about the ordinary man on the street? How they must have suffered,” he said.
Wong said his comrades have also become targets of the attack. As an elected representative of the people, Wong said he has to handle issues at times which would not please everyone, but it did not mean that threats of violence should be used against him and his family.
The offence of threatening is under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation.
