Paid RM100 to sabotage ice cream shop, teenager sentenced to 80 hours of community service

KUCHING: A teenage boy was ordered do 80 hours of community service within one year by the Magistrate’s Court here today.

Magistrate Zaiton Anuar sentenced the 18-year-old accused from Kampung Batu Kitang Jaya after pleading guilty to the charges under Section 427 of the Penal Code and read with Section 34 of the same code.

He was ordered to do community service within a year for damaging an ice cream shop after being paid RM100 to cause the damage.

Based on the charge sheet, he and nine other acquaintances were accused of damaging a table, a 55-inch television, a refrigerator and a closed-circuit camera (CCTV) belonging to a 32-year-old woman, causing a loss of RM8,000.

He was found to have committed the act at an ice cream shop in Sungai Apong, at about 11.30pm on 24 June.

If convicted, can be punished with imprisonment of not less than one year and not more than five years or a fine or both.

According to the facts of the case, while the complainant was packing goods to close the shop, suddenly the accused with other friends attacked the shop and damaged property.

The complainant then made a police report for further action.

Based on information from the accused’s smartphone that was dropped at the scene of the incident, it led to the arrest of the accused along with looted items such as clothes and an iron rod that was used on the day of the incident.

As a result of the investigation, the accused admitted that he had been paid RM100 to come to the ice cream shop and damage the complainant’s property.

In addition, the accused’s actions were also recorded on the CCTV found in the shop involved.

The prosecution of the case was handled by Prosecuting Officer Inspector Merylene Lindan Andrew Mang while the accused was not represented by a lawyer.
