Pan Borneo Highway is Adenan’s legacy

The highway which is still under construction is expected to be of great benefit to Sarawak.

JULAU: The success of the Pan Borneo Highway project implementation in Sarawak is the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem’s legacy.

In stressing this, caretaker Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said his predecessor had fought for Sarawak to have a highway that is of similar stature to those in Malaya.

“When we talk about the Pan Borneo Highway, I recall the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem saying Sarawak wants a highway similar to that of West Malaysia.

“If Malaya has a North-South Highway or an East-West Highway, we want the same thing. This is his legacy to Sarawak, giving us a highway with the support of the federal government,” he said.

He said this when officiating at the launch of the Julau section of the Pan Borneo Highway on Saturday (Nov 20).

Abang Johari said Adenan’s vision for the highway was realised due to the close collaboration between the state and federal government as well as having a Sarawakian in Senior Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof to oversee the project.

“When there was a change in federal government, the previous (Pakatan Harapan) government disrupted the progress of the (Pan Borneo Highway) project.

“In those 22 months (under Pakatan Harapan), there were many things that were affected – many changes. So, thank God; today the Pan Borneo Highway in Julau particularly has been completed.

“This has to be a lesson to us. They (the previous government) changed many things – this caused delays as it deviated from the original plan. But now everything is well,” he said.

The chief minister said Sarawak requires a more complete infrastructure in terms of roads for ease of travel as well as to develop the state’s economy.

“If it weren’t for that little problem (the change in federal government) previously and if Fadillah was still Minister (during the time), the (Pan Borneo) highway would have been completed.

“With the completion of this highway, it will benefit the people and they will have a more comfortable road to travel on. This is the result of a quality highway development,” he said.
