KUCHING: A silver lining amid the Covid-19 pandemic is the togetherness among the public in helping the less fortunate, says Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

The Sarawak Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister  said Sarawakians, regardless of race and religion, had come to the aid of those in need without being told to.

“They work together to provide food, clothing, daily necessities and so on to frontliners and folk who faced difficulties.

“The pandemic has also united Sarawakians in showing support and appreciation to the frontliners,” he said during the state-level National Day 2021 celebration on Tuesday night (Aug 31).

Abdul Karim, who is also the minister-in-charge of the celebration, said even though there were challenges posed by the pandemic, it did not mean that National Day could not be celebrated.

“If we follow strict standard operating procedures, we will be able to do it.

“In addition, such a celebration can be used as a platform to further enhance the spirit of patriotism and love for the country and unity among various races.”

Commenting on this year’s theme of Malaysia Prihatin and Malaysia Menang Bersama, Abdul Karim believed that it was spot on as it reflected what the Sarawak government had done and continued to do for the people, especially during the pandemic.

“We know that many are facing difficulties at this time, but we in the government always work hard to think and plan on how we can alleviate the people and frontliners’ problems since March last year until today.”

He said the Sarawak government was concerned about the health and safety of the people, hence the opening of 343 vaccination centres statewide.

“That is why in terms of the cumulative achievement of vaccination in Sarawak compared to other states in the country, we are currently ranked number three for the most numbers vaccinated with the first dose, and number two for those vaccinated with two doses.”

Also present at the celebration were Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and his wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Ragad Kurdi Taib, Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg as well as other Sarawak Cabinet ministers.
