KUCHING: The first meeting of the fourth term of the 14th parliament scheduled for Sept 6 to 30 has been moved to Sept 13 to Oct 12 – a duration of 17 days.

This was revealed by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, who stated that the amendment was in accordance with the provisions of Standing Order 11 (2), Rules of the Dewan Rakyat.

“The addition of two days of sitting is to give way for government matters or motions that need to be resolved,” he said on Wednesday (Sept 1).

Wan Junaidi stated that based on the Standing Orders, the prime minister as the head of the meeting council could change the dates set from time to time according to the suitability of the current situation.

“Moreover, 31 ministers and 38 deputy ministers, including four senior ministers, were just sworn in as Cabinet members two days ago.

“They need time to shoulder their responsibilities and to identify issues that need to be prioritised in each ministry by making short- and long-term plans to achieve the targeted objectives.

“The amendment of the dates will also provide time for preparation for the Parliament sitting with the composition of the new Cabinet and the process of approving the draft of decree from His Majesty Yang di-Pertuan Agong.”

At the same time, in line with the concept of Results Oriented Cabinet (Kabinet Berorientasikan Hasil), he reminded all Cabinet members to emphasise on high performance work culture to help the country recover its economy as well as oversee integrated efforts to free Malaysia from the Covid-19 pandemic.
