KUCHING: Graduates of Institut Pertanian Sarawak or Sarawak Agriculture Institute are urged to actively participate in the modernisation of agriculture.

Minister of Agriculture and Regional Development Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom pointed out that the state government, through the Agriculture Department, continued to be committed in developing skilful, knowledgeable and competitive human capital in agriculture.

“Modernisation of agriculture cannot be done by the old generation, there are many things that they may not understand or are able to master. Thus, graduates from institutions like Institut Pertanian Sarawak are needed.

“In the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, modernisation of agriculture is one of the thrusts to enable the strategy to be achieved. These graduates are the ones who can respond and fulfil the state government’s aspiration for Sarawak to become a high-income state by 2030.

“For example, precision farming requires professional manpower who are skilled and trained so these graduates are the people who can run it. The state government will always assist, be it through infrastructure or facilities.”

He said this during Institut Pertanian Sarawak’s 16th Convocation Ceremony here on Tuesday (Feb 22).

“If you want to be successful, you must follow those who are successful. With the knowledge that the graduates have obtained, I am confident that they will be able to become the agropreneurs that we need.”

He advised the graduates to venture into things that are profitable with the knowledge that they have acquired so that they could improve the livelihood of themselves as well as their family.
