MIRI: Foreign vehicles with summonses to settle will not find it easy to escape paying, thanks to a new enforcement system now in place.

The new system will check if a foreign vehicle crossing into their countries of origin via the Sungai Tujuh check point has a summons pending or not.

“The enforcement agency system has been upgraded, it will help us to know at the tip of the finger if foreign vehicles have been issued summonses or not. Those with summonses will not be allowed through until their summonses are settled,” said state Road Transport Department (JPJ) director Mohd Syafiq Anas Abdullah yesterday.

“For Sarawak-Brunei, we have what we call a “free-flow” scenario. You can enter the country anytime, no problem. But before leaving, you must settle or pay all your outstanding summonses,” he said.

Speaking to local media during the High Intensity Discharged (HID) headlamp operation on Friday night, he said that among the highest traffic offences made by foreign vehicles were speeding, beating the traffic lights and failing to wear seat belts.

Asked to comment on the highest or most common offences in Miri, Mohd Syafiq said it would be custom number plates and heavily-tinted car windows.

“Within five months of the operation which was held from January to May state-wide, we have recorded 3,694 traffic offences,” he said.

On the government’s new ruling of tinted windows regulations, Mohd Syafiq vehicle owners were reminded on the need to apply to JPJ if they wanted their vehicle’s windows to be fully-tinted.

“All you have to do is apply to us and pay RM5,000 for a permit for a duration of two years,” he said.

Miri JPJ chief Maya Morshidi explained that 27 officers were involved in the the High Intensity Discharged (HID) headlamp operation held at Miri City Fan.

Of the 530 vehicles inspected, four vehicles were given tickets for HID offences, 15 for no driving licences, four vehicles for expired road tax and 19 for other offences.
