KUCHING: The state sales tax (SST) payment by Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) to the state government was described as a present to all Sarawakians.
Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said the proceeds of the payment would be used to fund various people-centric projects across the state.
“This is a great hadiah (present) to Sarawak and Sarawakians alike. I am sure Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg will pass much of the money back to the people for various people-centric projects.
“For once, at least some of the money from Petronas is given back to the people of Sarawak,” he said in a Facebook post today.
Wan Junaidi, who is Santubong MP, said the payment by the national oil and gas company to Sarawak after a protracted legal battle between the two was a welcome news, describing the move by Petronas as “doing the right thing”.
“Heartiest congratulations to the State Attorney-General and his team and (state legal Counsel) Datuk Seri JC Fong for a work well done. It was great to listen to your submission and arguments in court,” the veteran lawyer said.
He also expressed appreciation to all the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) leadership for giving the Chief Minister their undivided and unflinching support on the challenging task.
“We must heave our gratitude and appreciation to our Chief Minister for his steadfast and courage to challenge the giant national corporation like Petronas, which we know is legally under the direct control of the Prime Minister.”
