KUCHING: Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), as the backbone of Gabung Parti Sarawak (GPS), has made the necessary early and continuous preparations for the upcoming state election.

PBB vice president Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said the 12th state election would be different compared to previous elections especially in terms of campaigning due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

“Despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 outbreak, PBB is always ready. The current situation has resulted in us having to change our campaigning strategy and focus on social media promotion instead,” he said when contacted on Thursday (Oct 7).

Dr Abdul Rahman stated that if the state election is held soon, the safety of voters would be prioritised given the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

He said it is paramount to provide the voters with reassurances as well as confidence to go out and cast their votes.

“I am confident that the necessary safety and health measures as well as standard operating procedure (SOP) will be put in place on the voting day,” he added.

The current Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) tenure ended after five years on June 6, however in view of the nationwide state of emergency which took effect from Jan 12 to Aug 1, the DUN did not dissolve on June 7.

Then in July this year, Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah had decreed that Sarawak be placed under a Proclamation of Emergency from Aug 2, 2021 to Feb 2, 2022 in view of the Covid-19 situation which means the state election will not be held until the Emergency is lifted.
