KUCHING: More than 300 bicycles of various types took part in the Kayuhan Kembara Merdeka (cycling convoy) in conjunction with the National Day celebration at Kampung Segedup Cabang here today (Aug 31).

Present to flag off the convoy was Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Satok deputy chairman Datuk Ibrahim Baki. Also in attendance were PBB Satok Youth chief Dzamaluddin Zainudin and political secretary to the chief minister Abdul Samad Ghani.

The event was co-organised by the Village Security and Development Committee (JKKK) Cabang Segedup, Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Kampung Segedup branch, Kampung Segedup Neighbourhood Watch Committees and Geng Otai Segedup Bicycle Association.

It aimed to instill the spirit of patriotism among the participants who proudly attached the Malaysia flag, also known as Jalur Gemilang, and the Sarawak flag to their bicycles and helmets.

In compliance with the standard operating procedures (SOPs) during the recovery movement control order (RMCO) period, the convoy only covered routes in the village area and only involved participants from Kampung Segedup here.

“This is a good way of celebrating Hari Merdeka,” Ibrahim told reporters when met at the event.

He said this historical day was also to remember and honour the sacrifices of our forefathers which enabled us to enjoy peace and harmony today.

“We are celebrating the success of Malaysia and the unity of our multi-racial society,” he said.

Ibrahim hoped that the country would remain peaceful and united so that the people could celebrate more National Days and togetherness as Malaysians for many years to come.

“We (Sarawak) will continue to stay in Malaysia. There is no issue. Some people might question the formation of Malaysia but we will always be Malaysians,” added Ibrahim.

Kampung Sedegup Cabang Ketua Kampung (village head) Rashidi Solek explained that first time the cycling convoy was being held for the first time to celebrate the National Day.

Rashidi, who is also the Geng Otai Segedup Bicycle Association chairman, said due to the RMCO SOPs, only 200-300 participants were allowed and they were reminded to strictly follow the one-metre social distancing rule and to wear face masks.

“We are looking forward to organising a bigger cycling convoy for Malaysia Day which is celebrated on Sept 16, and hopefully the situation warrants it by then,” he said.
