KUCHING:  Understanding and invigorating the party’s cause in developing the state and the people is one of the key criteria that will be used by the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu’s (PBB) top leadership to select candidates for the coming state election.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said the leaders would also consider loyalty to the party.

“These criteria form an important foundation to strengthen our ranks and for us to continue the soul and spirit of our cause,” he said during an interview at his office in Wisma Sumber Alam on Thursday (Sept 3).

He said that PBB had its own mechanism to evaluate and identify eligible candidates to represent PBB and contest in the coming state election.

“In PBB, we have many figures that have strong leadership qualities. So, we have no problem in finding candidates,” said Awang Tengah, who is also PBB deputy president.

He did not deny that there were incumbents who had expressed their intention to step down, paving the way for the party to find replacements.

He said that in the lead-up to elections, there were always groups lobbying to be candidates.

“It is common. The good thing is that our party leadership from previous times until now has always analysed the situation – such as the acceptance of the people and the personalities of the persons.

“This is not an easy matter, but it will be done very carefully,” explained Awang Tengah.
