A government backbencher has urged the federal Ministry of Education to consider building the proposed secondary school of SMK Melekun in his constituency.

Wilson Nyabong Ijang (GPS-Pelagus) said it is badly needed for students from 11 primary schools within his constituency to continue their secondary education.

“Besides SMK Melekun, I would like to request for iCATs to branch out to the Kapit division. The college is urgently needed by the community in Kapit so that we can provide skills training to meet manpower needed by the industries.

“I come to know that land matter is one of the challenges to build a new school in Sarawak and I hope Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development can sort out this issue with the federal Ministry of Education,” he said when debating the Supply Bill (2023) on Thursday (Nov 24).

At the same time, he urged the government to expedite the construction of a ferry ramp at Ng Tulie which was approved in 2019.

He said the people on the north side of Kapit town across the Rajang River are looking forward to the ferry service operation.

“In order to develop the Native Customary Rights (NCR) land in between Sungai Amang and Sungai Sut, I request the government to construct a new road link from Sungai Amang bridge to Sungai Sut connecting Antaroh Road.

“Moreover, the construction of a new road from Rumah Mengga Batang Rajang to Rumah Theophilus Unan, Rumah Nyangon, Rumah Umping and Rumah Sigan Ng Belabut Baleh will benefit over 23 settlements and longhouses,” he said.

He also requested for the government to look into upgrading 7km ex-logging road from Song Logging road pass by Bukit Raya to URDA road at Rumah Belaja Ng Benin Batang Rajang.

Wilson suggested there should be an increase in allowance for the village head and community leaders (KMKK) as they play a crucial role in disseminating information to the longhouses and villages throughout the state.
