PETROLEUM Sarawak Berhad (Petros), in collaboration with Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB), is making significant investments in Sarawak’s energy sector.

The latest development involves the establishment of a 400MW combined cycle power plant in Miri.
In addition, Petros is investing in a 24-inch pipeline to transport gas from Bintulu to Samalaju Industrial Park. The combined capital investment for these projects is estimated at RM2bil.

Deputy Premier cum Minister for International Trade, Industry and Investment, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, highlighted these initiatives during his ministerial winding-up speech at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting on today (May 24).

“Petros is also conducting a feasibility study with a multinational player to supply gas to Kuching, aimed at transforming the capital city into a thriving gas and energy hub.

“Moreover, discussions are underway with SEB to construct a new gas-fired power plant in Kuching, with plans to retire the existing coal-fired power plant.”

Awang Tengah emphasised Petros’ expansion in the liquified petroleum gas (LPG) business. The company’s subsidiary, PNiaga, is injecting an investment of RM60mil to support this, with Petros aspiring to achieve a 100 per cent household market share in LPG by the end of this year.

Additionally, Petros had been granted approval in principle for a carbon capture and storage (CCS) licence for the F-block offshore Sarawak, he said.

“This approval enables the operationalisation of State Land Code amendments previously approved by the August House during the last DUN sitting.

“Collaborating with Petronas, PetrosS aims to convert the M1 depleted gas field into Sarawak’s first CCS project, with a capital investment of RM2.5bil.”
