Speaking at the launch, Petronas chairman Datuk Ahmad Nizam Salleh provided some background on Petrosains and Petrosains PlaySmart.

“Petrosains was established in 1999 to provide facilities and exposure to children and youths towards interactive learning and exploration of science and technology with the aim of attracting the interest of the younger generation in this field,” he said.

He added that since then, Petrosains has executed various science and technology programmes such as outreach activities and mobile exhibitions all over the nation including here in Sarawak.

“In this regard, Petrosains PlaySmart was created as a satellite science centre to provide the same opportunities as the main science centre in Suria KLCC, Kuala Lumpur,” he revealed.

Ahmad added that thus far, four Petrosains PlaySmart centres have been established, namely in Kuantan, Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabalu, and the most recent one in Kuching.

“This year, Petronas has also launched Yayasan Petronas with its mission to contribute towards community wellbeing through three main thrusts — education, community wellbeing and development, and the environment,” he said.
